What causes skin cancer?
Skin cancer happens when the cells in your skin start to grow abnormally. This can be triggered by damage to the DNA in skin cells. The main causes include:
- Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun: The biggest risk factor. Long-term sun exposure or repeated sunburns can damage skin cells.
- Tanning beds: Artificial UV light can also harm the skin and increase cancer risk.
- Genetics: A family history of skin cancer can make you more likely to develop it.
- Fair skin or light eyes: People with less melanin in their skin are more prone to damage from UV rays.
- Weakened immune system: Certain medications or health conditions that affect immunity can raise the risk.
- Exposure to harmful chemicals: Some chemicals or radiation can increase skin cancer chances.
Early detection is key. Regular skin checks and protecting your skin from the sun can help prevent serious problems.
